The Long Road To Matsuri – Midnight Mechanics

For 200 drifters in South-East Queensland the next two weeks will possibly be the busiest two weeks of their entire year. For the Midnight Mechanics drift team, there is no exception, and the roll will be called for all four of us on Saturday the 6th of October. Each and every one of us have a list of things we need to check, build and ready before this event as there will be no other track day this year that will put as much strain on our cars.

For me, seemingly having the most reliable Corolla in the world, the only trade off being that it pisses oil everywhere, is quite convenient considering I am in my final weeks of my last year at University. The car will still be receiving a complete go over before the event to ensure everything is in perfect working order.

Jason Sherring has been fighting the worst luck possible on the lead up to this event with the problem of two dud gearboxes in a row while trying to do a W series conversion in his Ae86. His luck seems to be catching up however and hopefully there will be no further problems on the way.

Cassian has been busy in the process of building up a 20v motor for his Ae86, sadly only producing 94rwkw and a nice little knock to go with it. Fingers are crossed for him that it’s going to be some quick bearings to replace.

Jason Murray, who has had the toughest task of us all, has been finishing up the complete rebuild of his Ae86 which has been off the road for close to two years. The car has been completely stripped back, repainted, had a W box conversion with a F series rear end as well as a 4agte motor built up for it, which kicked over for the first time this week.
