This has to be one of my favorite images from the 2012 Tectaloy International Drift Challenge. Nigel Petrie, a driver who I am privileged to say I have driven with this year, put on a phenomenal show up against some of the big names in the game and managed to push out near flawless runs all weekend.
Each year, the Tectaloy International Drift Challenge is held alongside World Time Attack . Without fail, it brings the best of the best from all over Australia and New Zealand. This year, an absolute bombshell was dropped with the announcement of Japan’s legendary Team Orange drivers, Nobushige Kumakubo and Naoto Suenaga, confirming entries to take a shot at the prestigious title.
Imagine standing in front of a cheering crowd, in a country entirely different from your own, holding a trophy high in the air after having just competed against some of the world’s best drifters. The cool night air chills the sweat running down your face, every limb is exhausted from a night of fierce competition, but you couldn’t care less because you just won the Tectaloy International Drift Challenge.
I would imagine for Naoto Suenaga, feelings similar to this may have been rushing through him on Saturday the 11th of August, 2012.
THE WORLD TIME ATTACK CHALLENGE
What an event! Some of the fastest cars in the world complemented with some of the best drifters in the world, surrounded by show cars and trade stalls, wrapped together with an amazing sense of community. This event truly is a great example of where our scene is headed, and I think I speak for all of us when I say, I like it! Here at Excitement! Car Magazine we have been flat out collecting all of our content since arriving back from Sydney. There will be plenty more to come over the next few weeks, but for now, we’re just going to give you a little taste of what you can look forward to…
It’s that time of year again! The Tectaloy International Drift Challenge is coming to Sydney Motorsport Park this Friday and Saturday the 10th – 11th of August.
Our managing editor, Courtney McColgan, caught up with Jake Jones this week to discuss the talented field of drivers he is about to face , and his preparation for this year’s event.

I was very excited to hear this week that the Team Orange boys, both Kumakubo and Suenaga, will be competing in this years Tectaloy International Drift Challenge! While this isn’t the first time that a D1 driver has seen Australian tarmac, it will be the first time a Japanese D1 team will compete in Australia in their own cars.
The 2012 World Time Attack Challenge is shaping up to be a very awesome event which I am looking forward to more and more each day!
