Midnight Mechanics – 2012 Season

The last twelve months has absolutely blown by, but for us Midnight Mechanics it has been a year of unforgettable drift events. Our 2012 saw more track time together than any other year, and as such we have been getting quite the collection of footage from each of our events. I thought it would be suitable to do a compilation of all of our events from this year into one video. I’m looking forward to bringing you guys even more footage for the 2013 season. With both Jasons now running high strung 4agte setups, Cass’s ae86 coupe build and his current 20v Ae86 hatch along with my Sr20 ae71 build, we are really looking forward to ripping up the track even more so this year! Missing the Morning Sesh

I’m thoroughly missing those winter morning session shenanigans. I honestly cannot wait to get the camera out again and get covered in tire smoke!

The Morning Session Experience

Filmed and Edited: Grant Scott Edited: Courtney McColgan

Ever thought about heading to a Queensland Raceway morning session, but struggling to find motivation for the early start? Well, having just come back from last week’s session, I can tell you that it’s so much fun, I’m already planning my next one.

Putting my GoPro to good use, I have created a video of myself and my good buddies Mereki Dawson (Blue ke70), Jason Murray (Red R31), and Nick Rombouts (Green S13) from our most recent track day. Watch it, and you’ll see for yourself what I mean when I say it truly defines the word FUN!  Oh, and make sure you click the HD button to get the best viewing quality.

Remember, if you are thinking about getting out there and having a crack at drifting, a Queensland Raceway morning session is an ideal place to start. Now, stop thinking about it and get yourself out there!

Tandems!

Filmed and Edited: Cooper Macmillan Edited: Courtney McColgan

I know this post is slightly overdue, but the short track series ended with some spectacular driving that can’t go unmentioned. The drivers were out in full force with plenty of amazing entries and extremely close tandems. This series has been one of the best so far in Queensland for the drifting scene, and I definitely hope for it to pick up again.   The atmosphere at these events is super friendly and of course with Mez M.C.ing, the night was even better. Flynn Dowling didn’t participate in the tandems as he had, somewhat unwillingly, entered the competition side, rendering him unable to join in on the tandem fun, but he did very well in the comp…

Queensland Raceway Winter Morning Session | Grant Scott

I say it time and time again, but there is something magical about a Queensland Raceway morning session. Without a doubt it is my favorite drifting event in Australia. From the minute I arrive, the perfect mix of crisp winter morning air, with the smell of burnt tire gets my heart racing.

Jared Ahearn | Queensland Raceways Short Course Drift Competition | Round Two | April 20 2012

A good friend of mine, Jared Ahearn, turned up to the most recent Queensland Raceway Short Track round with more video gear than any single person should be able to afford and managed to produced this amazing video from the entire event. Somehow managing to mix Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds into the mix is a skill that only few can have, so enjoy the clip!

Round 2 – Queensland Raceway Short Track Series | Part 2

Here’s my final photos from Round 2 of the Queensland Raceway Short Track series that was held on Friday night. One of the understated cars of the night was Simon Mercers LS powered S13 which is still being dialed in but had no problem pouring out the smoke for the crowds.

Queensland Raceway Short Track Series | Round 2 | Part 1

It’s been incredibly refreshing shooting the last couple of rounds of the Queensland Raceway Short Track Series, and I am already pumped to shoot the next one. There has been some amazing action across both rounds so far that has seen plenty of drivers really push their cars past the limits, which is really what we want to see!

Those Damn Walls!

Nick Coulson was absolutely ripping it up last night at Round 2 of the Queensland Raceway Short Track Series driving with no reserve what so ever. Unfortunately close to the end of the night his car met the wall, effectively ending its ability to drive for the night. That didn’t stop Nick though as he quickly got back out on track with his S15 daily driver.

I’m very excited to see him get the car all fixed up and back out on track as soon as he can!

Short Track series @ QR!

Last week at Queensland Raceway, a drifting comp was held on the short track; Round 1 of the Queensland Raceway Short Track series. There was a huge turnout with loads of people turning up to watch 16 cars battle it out with 5 more doing trains in between during the down time which were great to watch. The night was good, despite turning up an hour late there was still lots of action to see and plenty of people to meet, two of which being Grant and Josh who I finally met for the first time.

QR Short Track Round 1 | Meercat

The Queensland Raceway Short Track Series took off last night, and one of the outstanding drivers of the night had to be Mereki keeping it real in his GZE ke70.

Because Ke70.

Stadium Drift Round 1

If you have missed the first round of stadium drift at Queensland raceway I will fill you in with this post. What most people will remember that day is that it was darn hot that day but they did have grins at the end of the day even if they were peeling like a snake and were red as a tomato.

Stadium Drift Round 1 at Queensland Raceway

Round one of Stadium Drift, held at Queensland Raceway, had to be one of the hottest days I’ve experienced out at Willowbank, and I’m sure many others would agree. However, this didn’t stop the show with a great amount of cars up for both the show and shine and general spectating. On the way there, stopping at a petrol station, the fuel pumped stuffed up for while, but not for long, as I headed back out on the way following Daniel Batchelor and his friends, who he seemed to be the only one not in a rush. The car kind of shut down on Champions Way again, so sorry to anyone we held up.

Matsuri 2011

I thought I’d remind every viewer on how much fun everyone had on October the 7,8,9th as well as getting hyped up and days after (for some weeks) talking about how much fun they had at our favorite track in Queensland: The Queensland raceway of course.

Queensland Raceway Friday Night Session

Last Friday night Queensland Raceway opened the track back to the public to its newly refurbished track. As eager as any drifter heading out for the night, I brought out the camera to snap the action.

New Contributor | Chez Watts

Over the past couple of weeks we have seen some very impressive content coming from local Brisbane photographer, Chez Watts. With his moody style of photography, we have been seeing a side of car meets that we have not seen before. Chez will be bringing you lots of cool events as he gets to them; but for now look forward to his feature on the Downshift x JDM x Euro OPEN MEET & GYMKHANA in the next few days.

Downshift x JDM x Euro OPEN MEET at Queensland Raceway

I have to admit I had my questions when I first heard this month’s JDMST meet was going to be held at Queensland Raceway. The more you think about it, however the more sense it makes; a Private property in an area that won’t be affected by the noise, as well as being a place that 90% of people in the car scene know how to get to. Which was a good thing too; because the meet had to the largest JDMST meet I have ever seen!

New Wallpaper | Dan Rasell

Dan Rasell has been absolutely killing it throughout 2011 and we will be watching him very closely through all of 2012. We are definitely looking forward to seeing what else he can pull out of his hat. For now, have a wallpaper of him practically reversing his car into the dipper at QR.

Check out the Wallpaper section!

Luke Fink Wrap Up 2011

2011 has been a very successful year for Luke Fink. With the first ever Australian Drifting Grand Prix being held this year the competition was absolutely obliterated with Luke winning three out of three rounds. Scott Mitchell has been there for each round and has just recently compiled the best of his footage together for an end of year wrap up.

Make sure you check it out and turn it up nice and loud!

Queensland Raceway Private Day September 2010

When it comes to drift days the ultimate bang for your buck has to be a private track day. Held quite regularly at Queensland Raceway these days will either be half or full days of non-stop fun where the only concern is how many tires you can bring. Last year in September I took the trip to get some shots of most of the boys from www.secretdrift.com.au having some fun and trading some paint.

Car Feature | More Whine Than a Frenchman at Dinner

One of the things that I love so much about the 4agze motor is the noise that comes from them. It is like nothing else. There is that unmistakable 4age note coming from the exhaust, but the high pitched whine that the supercharger emits just leaves you speechless. Listening to Mereki Dawson power his baby blue 4agze powered ke70 through the Queensland Raceway Short Track left me in this exact state.

Maximum Loud at Locky G’s Private Short Track

Just this Sunday past Josh and I took the trip up check out the private track day held by Lachlan Gassman. Until recently the only option for laying down your rubber was the main track which is quite a large, open track. The latest exciting addition to Queensland Raceway has been the short track which is essentially a very long skid pan. With the ability to have a number of different track configurations it makes for one awesome little track!

Porsche Spotting

On the drive back from Locky’s Short Track event at Queensland Raceway on Sunday Nathan and I spotted quite a few worked Porsche 911′s cruising down the highway. This one had to be hands down the most wild and I was even more impressed that it was driving on the road!

If I could ever afford to, something like this would be one of the few things I would happily sell up the Corolla for. If anyone is involved in the Porsche tuning scene please let me know as I would love to feature something like this as well as attend some track days!
